Well, we made it out of 2008, phew! Here's to a New Year and new beginnings. We wish all of our friends and family continued health, wealth, and love. If you didn't get enough of those last year, here's hoping that 2009 makes up for it.

As for what we have in 2009, well, we are kicking off the National Charity Model Search now until March 20. If you don't know what this is , take a look below at the previous announcement we recently made. It's a great cause and who wouldn't love the opportunity to win a $5000 savings bond, right?!?

For the adults, Valentine's Day is just around the bend and we'll be running a special for that, too. Stay tuned for that announcement.

Red Bird Photography is participating in the National Charity Model Search to select “America’s Cutest Kid” and to raise funds for charity.

We’re looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Models Search Special:
$35 entrance fee, which includes a 30 minute model session and one image submitted to the national gallery.

Finalists will be determined by online votes. Anyone may vote. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. (NILMDTS.org)
Grand prize national winner will be determined from the 50 city finalists. Winners selected by photography and modeling industry experts.

If your child is selected the national winner, you’ll receive many prizes, including a $5,000 US Savings Bond and a Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera.

A fun picture I took while staying at the Hale Koa hotel in Waikiki this past weekend. I almost remember being a kid and jumping in like that. Almost. We also got to go see Santa at Ala Moana and watch the performance of The Christmas Gift of Aloha, which is always a treat. All in all, it was a nice "stay-cation".

The dove is the international symbol of peace. I'm not quite sure this is a dove per se, but for the purpose of this post, it will do just fine and dandy :) I caught this little fella on his way to ... well, I'm not sure, lol!!! I think actually he was making his way to a breakfast buffet over at the local pigeon watering hole. Anyway, as the year winds down, I'd like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and whatever other holiday it is that you may celebrate. It is my sincere wish and hope that all who have read my blog have enjoyed my posts and musings over this past year. I look forward to sharing more of my images with you and I look forward as well to your comments. It is my wish as well that peace will ultimately prevail and that good continues to triumph over evil.

A 2nd Grade Christmas Show

Do You Drink Espresso?

My mother bought me an espresso machine recently and I have to say that I am still at a loss as to how much sugar to add so that it doesn't taste bitter. I like my coffee sweet and have discovered that American coffee is very forgiving when it comes to adding sugar. It won't taste bitter if you put too much. Espresso is a beast of a different nature, which I have yet to tame. Right now, I'm at about a teaspoon and a half. Not too bad, but I know it can be better :) Any suggestions out there? Please feel free to respond and let me know if there is an ideal and precise measurement for that perfect cup of espresso.

Wow, Santa was amazing! We just wrapped up our Christmas pictures with Santa over at USA Baby and boy, we had a great time! It was extra special because there were no long lines, no crowds and Santa got to spend some quality time with some very special little boys and girls. Sleeping Children Around The World

We have a lot to be grateful for: our health, the roof over our heads, that we can provide for our children, and the list goes on. But somehow, I didn't know how to express that gratitude. I wanted to find a way to give back to the universe, so to speak. Well, God placed a few opportunities in my path. First it was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Halloween Costume Contest Fundraiser, which was a great success. Then the Toys for Tots program of which I will be donating up to five dollars from session fees at the Santa Holiday mini-sessions atUSA Baby for anyone who donates a toy, and last but not least Sleeping Children Around The World. This is an organization which provides bedkits to the neediest of children in underdeveloped nations. One hundred percent of your donation goes to purchasing the bedkits. I belong to a group of photographers trying to raise money to purchase those bedkits. If you feel like you would like to give but maybe your finances aren't what they should be, don't worry. Here is a short quote from St. Francis of Assisi: "For it is in giving that we receive." Truer words were never spoken.

The Greatest and Most Difficult Job Ever

What is the most difficult job you can think of? Surgeon, pilot, police officer, construction worker? If those are your guesses, you're not even close :) Being a parent, in our opinion, ranks as the most difficult job. If you are a parent, you know what I'm talking about. You've been charged by God, fate, destiny, or whatever higher power you believe in to nurture and shape another living being. How well you do that job will be reflected in how successful in life that little person becomes. That's pretty overwhelming. You are also putting yourself last most of the time so that you can focus on this part of yourself that you've brought into the world. It means putting aside your own personal aspirations and dreams perhaps for 18 years. But what an amazing accomplishment it is when you have succeeded in making a person who is loving, honest, respectful, and has a strong moral compass.

I was out shopping today and wondering what in the world am I going to get my mom for Christmas?? I don't know about anyone else, but as I get older, I feel less and less inclined to buy things just for the sake of buying. I want whatever it is I give to have some sentimental value to it. (This way of thinking makes sense to adults, but not to kids unfortunately.) So, this year I will probably be printing some images I did of the kids. Hopefully, she isn't reading this, lol. Oops.

At the behest of a school buddy, we made it a tradition to photograph our newborn children alongside our intended holiday meal. Sharing Some Good News!

I recently entered this image in the Professional Photographers of Hawaii Quarterly Print Competition and found out today that it was honored with a merit. The first challenge is to get your print accepted for competition which I have done now at least five times in the past couple of months; this is no small feat. The next hurdle is scoring high enough to receive a merit which is what I have recently done. It is extremely difficult and I am so grateful to have the quality of my work acknowledged by fellow professional photographers. Thanks go as well to my supportive family and to my clients who give me the inspiration to push myself harder and harder.

Raising The Bar

I've been entering print competitions recently and wanted to share one of my recent entries. You may recognize it b/c I posted it last month. Anyway, entering competitions is a way of pushing my creativity just a bit further and pushing the envelope just a bit more. Why do I do it? Because it challenges me to look at my work in a different way and sometimes I come up with things that I never would have thought to do under normal circumstances. It's all good really, especially for my clients who get more creativity from me versus Walmart :)

Are You Ready?

Well, today it hit me. There are only 42 days until Christmas. Yikes. I'm not ready. I'm not even ready for Thanksgiving! Do you know what triggered this for me? I was in the midst of my daily/nightly ritual/vicious cycle of picking up the mess of toys my son had strewn across the house when all of a sudden I heard the song Jingle Bells being emitted by one of his mystery toys. You know what I'm talking about. That random toy that you hear but can't actually find b/c it's buried under a bunch more toys.

Anyway, I could use a few more weeks to plan and shop. Well, maybe I can count on Santa to bail me out at the last minute. He's a resourceful fellow after all.

Quadruplet Newborns!

Here they are! These beautiful children were born last month and came in today with their wonderful parents and grandmothers for their first portrait session. We worked pretty hard, but these little ones really stood up to the challenge and had to have been the most well behaved babies I've ever seen. No small feat and obviously quite a tribute to the hard work their mom and dad have put into taking care of them. Life will never be the same in their home; what a blessing!

Alright, airport wi-fi stinks. I tried downloading a movie to watch on my marathon plane ride back to Oahu and it failed miserably. But hey! I now have a three-video credit from Apple. Whoopee. I can't use it on the plane. So, maybe I'll try to get some shut eye and hope that I sleep through most of the flight. I'd buy a magazine or two, but that would mean more to carry, lol!! I'm not lazy, but I'm already carrying a 20 pound camera bag and laptop. I'm not willing to test my fortitude with a couple of extra things thrown in :) Something (namely my back) just might break.

I Love My Job

So, some of you may not know this, but currently I am at a photography workshop in Nashville, TN. I have finally met in person some of the most amazing people/photographers in the U.S. and Canada; up until now, we all knew each other via our photography forum. There has been an insane amount of information shared and I consider it an honor to be associated with this group. I must also thank my husband for taking time off from his job to watch the kids and give me the chance to make this long trek. He knows just how important photography is to me and I wouldn't have made it this far without his support.

Anyway, it is a wonderful feeling to be able to rub elbows with some industry greats as well as learn the latest and greatest. This trip has been a blessing for me.

9/11 and the US Coast Guard

Aloha Friends and Family,

I've been a busy, busy bee lately, but I wanted to make sure to take a moment today to pay tribute to our lost loved ones.

I remember 9/11 as if it were yesterday. I was sitting on a shuttle bus on my way into work and I was just shy of seven months pregnant. When I found out about what happened and when I saw the actual footage on tv, I felt what I'm sure many others felt. Dismay, helplessness, and vulnerable were the feelings running through me. A part of me felt almost terrified to be bringing a new life into this crazy world.

These animals, who we welcomed openly to our country and who returned the favor by causing death and destruction, forever changed life as we know it in the United States. An ironic change, is that It is far more difficult for honest immigrants to come here and make a new start. We have also been struggling with our economy and with our role in the world. Hopefully, whomever our new president is, he will have good guidance and will help us reach the light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, let's all take a moment to pray for the victims as well as for their families who will never again know the joy of seeing their loved one's smiling face and welcome embrace.

Many of you may or may not know this, but recently, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crashed about six miles outside of Honolulu Airport. On board were four men. Three did not survive their injuries and the fourth was never recovered. These kinds of incidents are extremely rare for our unsung Coast Guard service members. It is a small family that we are a part of and when this type of tragedy strikes, it is especially difficult. Especially saddening was that all of these brave men left behind young families.

For anyone interested, a fund to help their families has been started and you can find more information on how to help here.

One of my husband's favorite things to do is read when he's on his trips as well as on those rare occasions when he has a moment to himself. These days, he's been reading books by Dean Koontz. Family Reunion

Along my travels back to the Mainland, I also got to spend some time with my family just outside of Washington, DC. It was mom's 65th birthday and this year, she and my dad will celebrate 40 years of marriage. Pretty cool. So, we surprised them. We also took advantage to do a big group picture, which we hadn't done in 11 years. Yikes! Anyway, here we are :)

We'd like to let you know that we will be rolling out a very special baby plan for those of you expecting a new family member. Stay tuned for details on that as we are in the designing and development stages. In honor of this new baby plan, we'd like to give someone a chance to name our baby plan for us. You can begin submitting your idea today to us at gabi@redbirdphotography.com. There is a limit of one name per entrant.

The deadline to submit your idea is July 4, 2008. Final submissions will be posted and voting will consist of comments under each name idea. The deadline to vote will be July 31, 2008. The plan and the new name will be revealed on August 1. The winner will receive a complimentary portrait session as well as recognition on the blog for their masterful creation :)

Three Cheers For The TSA of LAX

This, my friends, is what is known as a rant. I prefer not to waste my blog space on ranting. But, I have to make an exception in light of what happened to me and my daughter yesterday at Los Angeles International Airport. We had just gotten off a flight from Denver on United Airlines and we were in search of Gate 72. We followed the signs and the next thing I know I'm two feet over the red security "no re-entry" line and I stop b/c the sign above looks like it continues on to the gates. I am clearly very confused and I ask the guard which way to gate 72. Well, chuckles sent me back through the security checkpoint instead of letting me walk back over the red line to make a quick left turn to the gates. Thanks, thanks a million. Once my daughter and I came back around, I said "you know, I was lost." You could have given me the benefit of the doubt and turned me toward the walkway two feet away. This was the brilliant response I got. "I could lose my job". Thanks for making a 5-foot-tall woman and her 6-year-old daughter walk back through security, which was FARTHER away than the gate turn and we ended up losing our nice bottle of water.

Transportation Security Administration, you need to seriously get your act together.

A Positive Change

Before I moved to Hawaii three years ago, I was pretty much like any other Mainlander or East Coast transplant. I avoided eye contact and very rarely did I make an effort to smile at or say hello to a stranger. You just don't do that because you never know if the person you're smiling at or saying hi to is a closet psychopath waiting to lunge at you with a Ginzu knife. Well, when we moved to Honolulu, something changed.

People were smiling and saying hi to me. What?!? Is my hair out of place? Is there mustard on my chin?? I made sure to go to the bathroom and fix whatever was looking not quite right. Much to my dismay, nothing was wrong. Did this mean what I thought it did? I decided to test my theory, that maybe people were just being friendly. Sure enough, the same thing happened. People smiled and said hello. Huh???

And so it was that I decided that I would make an effort to do the same. I have to say that being friendly and polite to complete strangers was the most liberating thing I have done. It doesn't take much effort at all and I actually feel pretty good afterwords. So, it has become for me, three years later, a habit to be friendly.

Ironically, in my travels to the Mainland, I am now the one receiving the blank stares when I am friendly. Ahh, life has a way of humbling us :)

A Couple More From Nashville

Today, I took a very short tour of Nashville. I went to see Ryman Auditorium, which was once home to the Grand Ole Opry, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. I also got to see Music Row and some of the historical sites. It was a nice way to pass the time. Here are a few images from my morning.
